Lexus CT 200h Luxury Line model year 2019

The Lexus CT 200h has been on the market since 2011 and plays an important role in the international market as the basic model for the luxury brand Lexus. The premium brand from Toyota has high expectations for the entry-level model, especially since the full hybrid models also benefit from the changed market conditions in Germany, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. By October 2018, the Lexus brand had increased its registrations by 63 percent year-on-year. When looking at the revised CT 200h, we focus on the essential innovations.

The CT 200h has not yet been properly established in the market in Germany, because the registration figures have so far been moderately below 300 units per year. During the revision, value was therefore placed on sharpening the profile. During the facelift, the diabolo radiator grille with a more distinctive lattice structure stands out even more than before. Another highlight is the pointed daytime running lights that sit directly above the LED headlights. The rear with its wide LED taillights also looks much more accentuated. The aluminum rims are available in sizes between 15 and 17 inches, depending on the model.

Full hybrid drive

As in the previous model, the hybrid drive has remained: It consists of a 1,8-liter gasoline engine with 99 PS (73 kW) and an electric motor with 82 PS (60 kW) output. The drive concept adopted from the Auris Hybrid has a total output of 136 PS (100 kW) and does not offer any ambitious performance compared to the sporty exterior. It is designed to be more defensive with a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 10,2 seconds and a maximum speed of 180 km / h. As with the models already tested by Toyota, the continuously variable automatic transmission with the rubber band effect that yells at high speeds is not the car for bold sporting appearances. On the autobahn, you will prefer gliding in the right or middle lane in the medium speed range. The system is then more or less perfectly designed for short journeys with stop-and-go phases.

Interior

Inside, Lexus has made some improvements compared to its predecessor. Our test car is dominated by light-colored leather upholstery, which was also used in the door panels. The controls are ergonomically arranged and the mighty center console looks very tidy and offers enough space for a cup holder, smartphone connection and smaller utensils. The air conditioning and the radio can be regulated using extensive control switches. The large-format central 10,3-inch display offers good glare-free resolution and contains all the essential configuration menus. A well-known problem with the Lexus models is the cumbersome operation exclusively via the hand flatterer in the center console - entering a destination address into the navigation system requires a steady hand.

The various comfort features have been expanded further. The seats are equipped with good lateral support and can be comfortably adjusted electrically for all sizes; the seat heaters for the front seats can be adjusted gradually depending on requirements and the settings for the mirrors and window lifters are ergonomically integrated into the side door. In the center console is the setting wheel for the driving modes, from the energy-saving "ECO mode" to the "sport mode". If the battery has enough reserves, the pure electric mode can be activated right next to it by pressing a button. Small gadgets have also been thought of: for example, a welcome light illuminates the interior for around 15 seconds when the key is approached and the headlights remain on for a moment when leaving the vehicle.

The assistance systems

In addition to the redesign of the interior, the safety equipment in particular was supplemented with extensive assistance systems. Similar to the competition, some features are already standard in the standard equipment. The system called "Safety +" by Lexus comprises a whole package of assistants. To prevent a rear-end collision, a radar system and a front camera for monitoring the lane are installed at the front of the vehicle. If dangerous situations are identified, a warning is displayed to the driver by means of a sound and a display. When the brake is actuated, the optimal braking force to avoid an impact is activated immediately. Even if the driver does not react, the autonomous braking system intervenes.
Pedestrians also benefit from this system. If the silhouette of a pedestrian is recognized, the automated braking process intervenes in the speed range between 10 and 80 km / h. The adaptive cruise control common in the premium brands is just as much a part of the standard equipment as the Blind Spot Assist. The lane markings are scanned using a camera installed in the windshield. The lane departure warning system intervenes if the lane is crossed without activating the indicator.

Lexus in the short and long distance test

As part of our test drives, we extensively tested the assistance systems on the A7 in the motorway area. All systems work perfectly with the usual restrictions on construction sites and in very bad weather conditions. Traffic sign recognition is also very practical for compliance with the different speed ranges. As part of the evening and night drives, we have also made friends with the automatic high beam control. It reacts to vehicles in front and oncoming vehicles by switching to low beam. Together with the assistance systems presented above, you can drive completely relaxed.

But especially in the city area, the strengths lie. The restrained driving and swimming in the big city traffic are easy to implement thanks to the automatic system. The entrances are also perfectly designed thanks to the low sills and wide-opening doors. When maneuvering, the broad roof pillars restrict the view to the rear. This disadvantage is compensated for by the reversing camera. The trunk volume is sufficient. With a volume of 375 liters and thanks to the smooth trunk floor, the Lexus is easy to load and unload. A storage compartment under the trunk floor can be used for utensils that should remain in the car. By folding down the rear seats, the volume can be expanded to up to 985 liters for bulky goods.

The CT3,8h does not achieve the brochure consumption values of 200 liters given by Lexus in our tests, but at least 5 to 6 liters of consumption can be achieved in ECO mode on short and country roads and almost 7 liters on the highway with a defensive driving style realistic. In standard and sport mode, the values are correspondingly higher. While the Lexus can score with the manageable consumption values, the classification in the high insurance classes (KH 21, TK 24, VK 24) reflect the premium segment.

  1. I simply cannot understand the repeated criticism of Lexus' Remote Touch control system from many journalists. The joystick allows much faster inputs than a classic turn-push system and is far less distracting than a conventional touchscreen. It took me less than an hour to adapt from the touchscreen to the Remote Touch, and every time I drive a push-turn vehicle I feel like I've stepped back 20 years.
