Mazda continues to work with the naturally aspirated Skyactiv engines in the current model series. With the four-cylinder engine and the current facelift, proven Mazda technology is still used. It is the large-format cruiser for long-distance and holiday trips with sufficient storage space for all transport and leisure activities. In the current test, we placed value on suitability for everyday use and comfort.
To increase fuel efficiency and engine performance, Mazda developed Skyactiv technologies. Skyactiv aims to reduce CO2 emissions and vehicle fuel consumption, thereby making an important contribution to global environmental protection. The Skyactiv-X engine is the first petrol engine with compression ignition, meaning the fuel-air mixture ignites when it is compressed by the piston. This is achieved using the Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) combustion process developed by Mazda.
In addition, the petrol engines are connected as standard to a 24-volt mild hybrid system to further increase efficiency. With the Mazda CX-5 Homura, the customer can choose between 3 engines. 2 SKyactiv engines and a mild hybrid variant are available. In our test, we drive the 2,5 l SKYACTIV-G 165 (121 kW / 165 hp) as an all-wheel drive version with manual transmission.
The special model Homura has been refined with some optical details compared to the basic models. Individual design elements, such as the raised black wing motif and a defining light signature of the LED headlights, enhance the CX-5. Connectivity with the smartphone has been rounded off with the charging cradle in the center console with a loading floor that can be positioned at two different heights.
In the technical area, too, there is a further optimization for the adaptation of the driving modes with automatic transmission to the road conditions with the updated driving mode assistant Mi-Drive. The safety and assistance systems have been supplemented with a traffic jam assistance function that supports steering, braking and acceleration processes in heavy motorway traffic.
As before, Mazda relies on finely graded equipment packages and models that are not very customizable. In this respect, the customer must decide in advance which features are fundamentally important to him. Special requests such as a sunroof or leather seats, for example, are only available in the highest quality equipment lines.

The CX-5 is a bestseller in the Mazda portfolio worldwide. It offers plenty of space with comfortable and well-made seats. With 522 liters of storage space, there is also plenty of space in the trunk, which can be expanded even further with the flexibly folding rear seats.
Anyone who has taken a seat behind the steering wheel is enthroned in ergonomically well-shaped seats with good lateral support. After the start, the essential information is projected onto the easy-to-read head-up display on the windscreen. In line with the spirit of the times, the large-volume 2,5-litre four-cylinder is not designed for maximum acceleration but for low consumption thanks to cylinder deactivation. Only in the more progressive sport mode do the consumption values increase accordingly. In the test on our mixed routes in spring 2022, we averaged 7 to 8 liters of premium petrol with a moderate driving style.
Mazda customers value the large-format CX-5 for its long-distance capabilities. With the extensive space and trunk offer, the possible uses are wide-ranging. From hobbies to transporting equipment to family vacations or as a company car, the SUV can bring its qualities to bear. In long-distance operation, driving is relaxed with the adaptive cruise control.
With its in-house development, the Skyactiv motor, Mazda still relies on the internal combustion engine with optimized consumption values. As a large-capacity SUV, the CX-5 is a generalist for families, transport and business with a wide range of equipment variants. It remains one of the most popular Mazda models, accounting for a quarter of all new car sales worldwide.
