Portrait of the Mazda CX-60 Homura e-SKYACTIV PHEV

Big bigger Biggest. Mazda has made significant progress in the model range in recent years. The CX-60 with a plug-in hybrid with a system output of 327 hp is now also being presented in the premium segment with the Homura equipment. With its stately dimensions, it is a competitor model to the established Q5 or X5 of the competitors. When looking at the extensive assistance systems, the appealing ambience and the striking appearance, the question arises as to how well the CX-60 drives in the upper premium segment.

The appearance of the new luxury SUV scores with a concisely high and wide radiator grille with an illuminated emblem. The bonnet looks elongated and offers a contrast to the short tail. With the use of the new long platform as a basis, the SUV extends to a total length of 4,75 m. And this space advantage is reflected above all in the generously dimensioned interior. The technology under the bonnet extends to a longitudinally installed four-cylinder "Skyactiv G" four-cylinder petrol engine and a 129 kW electric motor, which is fed by a 17,8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The vehicle, which weighs a good 500 tons, is driven with a total of 2,1 Newton meters of torque.

High system performance

With the Mazda CX-60, the customer still has the choice between diesel and PHEV drive. The price premium is moderate compared to the diesel version. With the end of the environmental bonus this year, all manufacturers have switched to noticeable price reductions for PHEV drives. The most powerful variant with the noble Homura equipment as a PHEV is 54.750 euros in the list price 500 euros cheaper than the most powerful diesel drive (prices February 2023).

The drive comes with an 8-speed automatic and an all-wheel drive system that is equipped with an appealing grip on all terrains. And not only that, with a trailer load of up to 2.500 kg, it also offers tough qualities for everyday work or leisure activities. This SUV is also a successful compromise between power and agility in everyday use. In 5,8 seconds, it sprints quickly from a standing start to 100 km/h. When you change direction, the steering system responds with noticeable feedback and then straightens itself out again to keep you going in a straight line. What is surprising, however, is the spongy feel of the brake pedal on the foot during jerky braking. Especially with such a powerful SUV, the feedback should be signaled more clearly.

Comprehensive assistance systems

A bit of zeitgeist also resonates in the CX-60, so the top speed is limited to 200 km/h and the purely electric drive can achieve a range of up to 63 kilometers with a fully charged battery under optimal conditions. For fans of assistance systems that can be used practically for long-distance traffic, they can be extensively guided by the lane assistance system, the adaptive cruise control, the blind spot warning or the practical hill descent assistant.

The impressions convey a large-format SUV with enough space for the big tours. With the wide selection of driving programs, every everyday terrain can be mastered very well. The 360 degree monitor for maneuvering and parking is really practical in everyday life. An extended traffic jam assistance function with an automated steering system for speeds up to 150 km/h as well as brake and acceleration assistants is interesting for long-distance journeys.

If you want to use the CX-60 even more, you can also couple a braked trailer weighing 2,5 tons. This is an additional option in addition to the variable storage space. This can be quickly expanded from 570 liters to up to 1.726 liters using the folding rear seats. This is a noticeable argument for intensive SUV users. But you also have to calculate with the corresponding consumption values. During our test drives with all driving programs, we were between 9 and 10 liters of E-10 petrol according to the displays in winter operation.

Conclusion

With the CX-60 has Mazda expanded the portfolio above the CX-5 with a premium version. With the armada of assistance systems, the space available and the flexible application options, the PHEV version has opportunities for intensive use in the leisure and commercial sectors. It is also interesting for Mazda drivers who are interested in a model above the CX-5.
