E‑PACE R‑DYNAMIC PHEV SE 2023

Travel with the E‑PACE R‑DYNAMIC PHEV SE 2023

Jaguar is on the way to phasing out the combustion engine by 2025. In addition to the I-Pace as a purely electric car, the current model range also includes the Jaguar E-Pace as a plug-in hybrid. As a heavy SUV, it achieves a system output of 309 hp thanks to downsizing to the three-cylinder engine and the electric motor. Despite a total weight of a good 2,2 tons, it travels quickly on our test drives in winter 2023.

Jaguar offers the E-PACE with a wide range of engines as mild hybrid versions and in the PHEV version. Due to the elimination of the environmental bonus, the market will probably orient itself even more towards even more registrations of purely electric cars. But if you can still use the wall box in your own carport or in the garage, the PHEV is always worth considering. The competitor to the compact Audi, BMW or Mercedes SUV pleases with its understatement. Discreet in appearance, it impresses, especially in the interior, with high functionality, very convincing seats and a good overview.

With four driving programs, you can experience the entire driving portfolio according to your own taste. From the subtle ECO mode to the sport mode, the driver can choose between the individual driving experiences. The three-cylinder whirrs or hisses subtly under the hood, depending on the driver's requirements. The 8-speed automatic transmission coordinates the interaction of the two engines, and depending on the driving program, short transitions are noticeable when changing gears. When used optimally, it is safe on long journeys, and as an SUV tourer, it demonstrates its advantages with the sophisticated assistance systems and the adaptive cruise control.

ADSR mode ensures optimal grip

The interior is optimized for the driver and front passenger. The driver's seat alone, with its multiple adjustment options, the ability to save the seat configuration and the practical center armrest, invites you to go on long tours. For the driver, value is placed on a high level of intuitive ease of use, while key climate control functions can be quickly and easily reached via touch controls on the center console. The traditional automatic lever is classically placed in the center console. A clear one Head-Up Display provides real-time information on the maximum speed and the speed driven, as well as on the navigation.

But not only the tasteful interior is appealing. Especially in winter it is important to put the 309 hp and 540 Newton meters of torque on the asphalt in all road conditions without slipping. There is a suitable solution for this as well. The AdSR mode can be engaged via the rocker switch for the adjustable driving modes. In this way, the surfaces are sensitively recorded and starting and braking aids are used effectively, especially on snow-covered or icy roads. The dosed grip is the optimal answer to winter driving.

Charging at the wall box

Compared to the classic traditional six-cylinder, the hybrid drive with 309 hp and 540 Newton meters of torque is more frugal with fuel consumption. The predicted 1,6 liters of E10 petrol according to the WLTP are of course illusory in winter in practice as soon as the battery capacity is used up. But it can definitely level off at values between 6 and 7 liters, and given the high dead weight, that is an advantage in terms of environmental awareness and CO2 reduction. After all, the PHEV can be driven electrically for up to 40 kilometers in the real north in winter, and the battery can be charged to up to 80% of its capacity in just over half an hour. This makes it particularly interesting for the home wall box.

The compact E-Pace is currently the answer to the zeitgeist for lower consumption and lower CO2 emissions. When compared to the earlier large format sixes, halving the number of cylinders alone is an environmental gain. In the areas of noise insulation, the sophisticated chassis and driving comfort, the baby Jaguar presents itself in the traditional values of the brand. Even when accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h within six and a half seconds and when overtaking, the E-PACE jumps without switching to the super sports car category.

Conclusion

Before Jaguar's big electric offensive can be expected in two years, the luxurious E-PACE can score as a plug-in hybrid with the typical Jaguar DNA. With a bundle of appealing ambience and practical driving assistance systems, it impresses with high driving stability and well-engineered suspension comfort, especially in winter. The compact model as a PHEV is a bundle of power with excellent workmanship.
