Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric Ultimate in the winter test

Volvo Car is focusing on new electric models this year. One of the most interesting new releases in recent years is the purely electric Volvo C40 Coupe. The demand for coupes among SUVs has increased slightly in recent years. At Volvo, the focus is on traditional values such as the comfortable interior and the large, trapezoidal central information display combined with new, purely digital elements. Our 2024 winter test focuses on driving safety and consumption values in cold weather conditions.

Volvo is continually making the switch from plug-in hybrids to many purely electric models. A striking feature is the individually designed electric front grill and the revised grill surround. The technical data promise a sophisticated electric car. With two electric motors on the front and rear axles with a maximum torque of 670 Newton meters, the coupe is more dynamic than the models with combustion engines, especially when it comes to elasticity when overtaking from 80 to 120 km/h. The lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 79 kWh ensures sufficient range.

In the true north, winter has now set in with consistently frosty temperatures, predominantly in the single-digit minus range. There are plenty of tasks and routes in the sprawling Schleswig-Holstein. Before we venture onto the slopes, we need to take a look at the extensive equipment and assistants.

Assistance systems in the premium segment

When it comes to standard equipment, Volvo traditionally focuses on safety, which is guaranteed primarily by the numerous active and passive safety features. Worth highlighting is the City Assistance System, including pedestrian, cyclist and wild animal detection as well as a brake assistant for intersections. What is relevant in practice for long journeys is the tried and tested adaptive cruise control, which is activated via one-touch directly on the steering wheel with your thumb. A whiplash protection system including immersion protection is integrated to protect the occupants. We had the system on board and what stands out is the automated braking when parking and parking as soon as an obstacle has been identified.

Comfort and ergonomics in the interior

At Volvo, value is placed on high-quality seating comfort with very good lateral support and configurations that can be saved individually. They are upgraded with the heated and ventilated seating elements. The multifunction steering wheel includes all the essential controls for speed, media and telephone functions and adaptive cruise control. A head-up display, which is actually common for the premium segment, is also desirable for the future.

On tour with the C40

We have the most beautiful long distances for the test drives Schleswig-Holstein chosen. During our test kilometers we were able to experience the dynamics and great smoothness in all speed ranges. A very comfortable suspension is achieved thanks to the independent suspension with good damping characteristics. For fans of automated driving, the adaptive cruise control is very convenient thanks to easy activation and quick speed adjustment using the left thumb. After stopping at the traffic lights, the system is immediately reactivated by lightly pressing the power pedal.

The 360 degree all-round view on the trapezoidal display makes maneuvering very easy for the compact SUV. The total supervision and the obstacles are reported back visually and acoustically. Depending on the driving situation and the selected mode, consumption values of between 20 and 30 kWh per 100 km of driving can be achieved on the test routes in winter. With a total weight of a good 2 tons and the high air resistance, these are normal values. In summer there is some potential for savings in energy saving mode. The combined WLTP range is stated by Volvo as 439 kilometers. In winter the range changes very quickly; in severe frost, realistic values in our extensive test drives are between 220 and 260 kilometers. We switched on electricity-relevant consumers during these trips. Anyone who invests so much money in their new car wants to drive comfortably.
