Webasto and Samsung SDI plan to work together

According to its own information, Webasto is a global system partner of almost all automobile manufacturers. The cooperation takes place with the company Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. based in South Korea. In the Webasto headquarters, the two partners agreed on a future collaboration on March 9, 2018. According to the press release, the letter of intent was signed by representatives of both companies in Stockdorf and provides for cooperation in the production of high-voltage batteries in the commercial vehicle sector.

The agreement is to include the development and delivery of a battery module from Samsung SDI that has been specially adapted and optimized for Webasto standard battery systems for commercial vehicles. The prismatic lithium-ion battery cells built into the module guarantee the highest energy density and the most efficient use of space. Webasto integrates this module in its battery packs, which in turn can be combined as required to form a battery system. This design enables individual solutions for the respective requirements of commercial vehicle manufacturers.

"We are very pleased to be driving the development of high-quality design-to-cost battery systems with an internationally successful and qualified partner like Samsung SDI," explains Hartung Wilstermann, Executive Vice President of the E-Solutions & Services division of the Webasto Group. “For us, the cooperation with Samsung SDI is an important step towards our goal of becoming one of the leading global system partners in the field of battery production. There are three aspects that are important in the battery business and that we have already mastered: In addition to thermal management, this includes the integration of large components in vehicles at the manufacturer's and, in addition, our many years of industrialization expertise. This will enable us to optimally support OEMs in the battery business in the future. "

The development of battery systems is one of several strategic expansions to the Webasto product portfolio. The company's commitment to electromobility is embedded in a dual strategy based on the two pillars of “strengthening” and “participating”. This includes the consistent strengthening of the core business areas and also the development of new business areas that fit the company's competence profile. In addition to the development of battery systems, this also includes a product portfolio of charging solutions for private and commercial customers.
