At Subaru, the turning point away from the traditional boxer engine will be heralded in 2022. With the world premiere of the new Solterra, a completely new path has been taken into the BEV world. A major step away from the pure on- and off-road SUV was also taken. A timeless, modern design is expressed in the striking hexagonal grille and is continued in striking lines with clear refractive edges. The Solterra was built on the Subaru Global platform modified for BEV vehicles.
It is noticeable that the manufacturer, which traditionally specializes in all-wheel drive cars, will be offering the new model both with front-wheel drive with 150 kW output and as an all-wheel model with two 80 kW electric motors. With 71,6 kWh, the battery pack is sufficient for the medium-haul range. The charging options for direct current with a maximum charging power of 150 kW are also practical for quick charging.

With all-wheel drive, the front and rear axles are each driven separately by their own electric motor. Regular Subaru customers are particularly addressed here with a precise distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles. The X-MODE AWD control system is also used in the new model. Subaru relies on stable driving behavior at constant speed regardless of the terrain.
All-wheel and rear-wheel drive
The model with the 150 kW electric motor as front-wheel drive also appeals to many potential new customers who do not want to use the car off-road. The vehicle was jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Toyota Motor Corporation and Subaru Corporation agreed to jointly develop a platform for battery electric vehicles for both brands in 2019. With the agreement, Subaru has shifted its existing development resources in the field of electric vehicles to the new joint project.
According to the manufacturer, the market launch of the Solterra will begin in mid-2022 in the markets of Japan, USA, Canada, Europe and China.
